Abraham Lincoln
The first talkie from silent cinema artist D.W. Griffith serves as a companion piece to his masterpiece BIRTH OF A NATION, presenting a full biographical sketch of the 16th President. Throughout the film, we witness his humble beginnings in a log cabin, the tragic death of his first love, Ann Rutledge (Una Merkel), his debates with Douglas, his acceptance of the presidency, the awful toll of the Civil War, and, finally, his untimely death at Ford's Theater. Griffith's fastidious attention to period detail is on display here, and the framing of the numerous vignettes has the appearance of historical images brought to life. Mr. Huston is outstanding in the title role, developing his character gently from a laconic, wizened rascal to a dignified elder statesman over the course of the movie. A fascinating and deserving film, as well as a significant historical document in and of itself, this is a must-see.
