American Dreams in China
During the 1980s economic reform period, three college students share a common desire to fulfill the American dream. A redneck who defies his fate as a farmer; a self-assured cynic; and an idealistic romantic poet. Xiaojun is the first to get a US student visa. Yang joins but stays in China for his beloved. The US Embassy rejects Dongqing repeatedly. Confused, he reluctantly accepts a position teaching English at a university but is fired for teaching private tutorial lessons. Across the Pacific, Xiaojun is forced to work as a busboy at a diner.
