Black Gold
Two warring commanders meet in the Arabian Peninsula in the 1930s. The triumphant Nesib, Emir of Hobeika, offers rival Sultan Amar of Salmaah peace terms. The two men agree that neither of them can claim the Yellow Belt, which is a no-land man's between them. As a protection against invasion, Nesib adopts Amar's two sons Saleeh and Auda. Saleeh and Auda have matured into young men after twelve years. Saleeh, the warrior, longs to break free from his golden confinement and return to his father's homeland. Auda is exclusively interested in reading and learning. An American from Texas pays a visit to their adoptive father Nesib one day. He informs the Emir that his country is rich in oil and promises him fortunes beyond his wildest dreams. Nesib envisions a world of limitless possibilities, a monarchy where the black gold beneath the arid sand pays for roads, schools, and hospitals. Only one issue remains. The Yellow Belt is where the golden oil is found.
