Danton
Danton and Robespierre were close friends and fought alongside one another throughout the French Revolution, but by1793, Robespierre had become France's ruler, intent to eliminate dissent through a series of mass executions dubbed the Reign of Terror. Danton, who was well-known as a populist spokesperson, had been living in relative seclusion in the French countryside, but he returned to Paris to oppose Robespierre's harsh reign and to rally the populace to demand their rights. Robespierre, on the other hand, could not accept such a challenge, even from a friend and colleague, and he thwarted a plan to capture and execute Danton and his allies.
