Dolls
Dolls' central theme is puppeteering, specifically the kind used in Bunraku doll theater performances, with the puppets and their masters providing thematically related stories. An arranged marriage to his boss's daughter is one of the stories told by Matsumoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima). On the surface, he agrees, resulting in Sawako's incarceration. In order to save Sawako, he leaves his new bride at the altar, tying her to him with a scarlet rope. Coupled, they travel through Japan, meeting others who have sacrificed love for temporary pleasures like fame, power, and wealth.
