Escape from Sobibor
To avoid a repeat of what happened in Sobibor, the commandant of the death camp at Treblinka threatened to kill all of his inmates if they ever escaped. Its hostages, the Jewish laborers who were saved from the furnaces, realized that they were on borrowed time and that their only hope was to escape... the only question that remained was how to do it. Eleven German officials and several Ukrainian guards were killed by the camp's subterranean resistance on October14, 1943. 300 convicts fled from the camp, but most were recaptured and executed. As a result of the escape, the Nazis were compelled to shut down the extermination camp, demolish it, and replace the land it occupied with a forest.
