Fateless
During WWII, a Hungarian adolescent comes of age at Buchenwald. György Köves, 14, is the son of a merchant who has been sent to a forced labor camp. György gets a job at a brickyard after his father leaves; his bus is stopped and its Jewish passengers are sent to camps. György finds camaraderie, suffering, cruelty, illness, and death there. He hears advice on how to maintain one's dignity and self-esteem. He discovers hatred. What will he find if he survives and returns to Budapest? What is natural; what does it mean to be a Jew? Sepia, black and white, and color alternate to shade the mood.
