The story follows a triad of Japanese young people of Chinese descent who leave their semi-rural upbringing as well as relocate to Shinjuku, Tokyo, where they befriend a troubled Shanghai woman of the street as well as fall nasty of a neighborhood crime syndicate. Like many of Miike's works, the film analyzes the underbelly of decent Japanese culture and also the troubles of assimilation encountered by non-ethnically Japanese individuals in Japan.
