Longtime Companion
It follows a small group of friends from their first encounter with the sickness in 1981, when the New York Times published an article on it. When first referred to as "Gay-Related Immune Disorder," we see the disease's devastating effect on the lives of our heroes, who are affected by it. Vignettes shift between Manhattan and Fire Island, taking us from the "it-couldn't-happen-to-me" thinking of the disease's early days to the invasive influence it has had on all of our lives now. A refusal by The New York Times to mention homosexual relationships in its obituary section during this time inspired the film's title. To avoid confusion, the deceased's "Longtime Companions" were instead referred to as "Longtime Friends."
