Nostalgia
In order to learn more about the life of a Russian composer who lived in the 18th century, the Russian poet Andrei Gorchakov and his guide and translator Eugenia are currently conducting research in Italy. In a long-abandoned spa town, he comes face to face with the deranged Domenico, who, many years before, kept his own family hidden up in his home for seven years in an effort to protect them from the dangers of the outside world. Because Andrei recognizes in Domenico's behavior a profound honesty, they develop a mutual attraction to one another. In a sequence of nightmares, the poet's sentiments of homesickness for his own country and his desire to be reunited with his wife, as well as his conflicted emotions toward Eugenia and Italy, and his sense of kinship with Domenico, become entwined with one another.
