Old Gringo
Harriet Winslow, a school teacher, is kidnapped by Gen. Tomas Arroyo and his revolutionaries when she travels to Mexico to teach. Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce, an aging American also in Mexico, befriends Gen. Arroyo and meets Harriet. Bierce is a famous writer who, knowing he is dying, wishes to keep his identity hidden so that he can decide his own fate. Though he likes Arroyo, Bierce tries to incite the General's rage whenever possible in order to kill himself and avoid suffering from his illness. Winslow is drawn to both Bierce and Arroyo, and the men are drawn to her. She falls in love with Arroyo. When Winslow discovers Bierce's true identity (a writer whose work she has long admired and admired), she is determined to fulfill his dying wish. DesMarais, E.W.
