Paulie
Paulie, a talking intelligent parrot, tells the story of his ordeal to a Russian immigrant working as a janitor at the research institute where he is housed and neglected. Paulie's story begins many years ago, when he is given to a little girl who stutters as a gift. He eventually teaches the girl to speak correctly, but she is taken away by her father because he believes she cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality because she believes the bird can talk. Before being taken to the institute where he now lives, Paulie has a series of adventures with a pawn shop owner, an aging widow, a Mexican-American troubadour, and a would-be thief.
