Pray for Rain

A reporter from New York City, Emma Gardner, returns to her hometown after learning of her father's untimely death to discover that the idyllic farming community where she grew up has been devastated by drought and transformed into a place where gangs rule and where the effects of extreme poverty are evident. There was no accidental death at all, and she rapidly realizes this. Environmentalists, a local warlord, and other farmers who were jealous of her father's reputation are among the likely possibilities.
