Red Sorghum
An elderly leper who ran a distant sorghum winery passes away. Jiu'er, the leper's wife, and her boyfriend, whom the narrator only refers to as "my Grandpa," take over the winery and establish an idealistic quasi-matriarchal commune led by Jiu'er. As the sorghum grows back after the Japanese invaders cut it down to make place for a road, the community rises up and resists.
