The Magician
The Magician (Ansiktet) by Ingmar Bergman is an engrossing, brilliantly conceived tale of deception from one of cinema's greatest illusionists. Dr. Vogler, a nineteenth-century traveling mesmerist and peddler of potions, is put to the test in Stockholm by the cruel, eminently rational royal medical adviser Dr. Vergérus. As a result, the film is a diabolically clever battle of wits that is both frightening and hilarious, shot in rich, gorgeously gothic black and white.
