The Mayo Clinic, Faith, Hope and Science
The Mayo Clinic: Faith, Hope, and Science is the story of a unique medical center that has been called a "Medical Mecca," the "Supreme Court of Medicine," and a "place for hope where there is no hope." After a devastating tornado in rural Minnesota in 1883, the Sisters of Saint Francis and a country doctor named William Worrall Mayo decided to work together. Since then, it has grown into an organization that helps more than a million people each year from all 50 states and 150 countries. Dr. Mayo taught his sons Will and Charlie a simple idea: "The needs of the patient come first." Instead of treating diseases, they would treat people. In a world where healthcare is usually delivered by separate specialties, the Mayo Clinic uses a team-based, multi-specialty approach that has, from the beginning, created a culture that thrives on collaboration.
