The Silence Before Bach
This latest feature film from the eccentrically experimental Catalan director Portabella is a gorgeous, sometimes a little bit bonkers celebration and contemplation of the role Bach's music plays in the world today. Portabella's film was inspired by the composer's music, which he composed in the 18th century. The film creates a playful, painterly sequence of variations on the argument that Johann Sebastian changed the way the world hears as a result of his extraordinary ear for harmony by combining historical reconstruction with very loosely linked "dramatic" scenes and documentary sequences. These scenes and sequences are linked together in a very loose fashion.
