The Statement
The film is set in 1990s France. After the French were beaten by the Germans early in World War II, an armistice was struck in 1940 essentially dividing France into a German-occupied north and a semi-independent south known as Vichy France. In reality, the Vichy Government was a German-backed puppet regime. The Vichy Government agreed to assist in the 'cleaning' of France of Jews as part of the pact.
