The Trial
The impeachment and removal of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff from office in 2016 was precipitated by a corruption scandal involving, among others, her then-vice-president Michel Temer. Director Maria Augusta Ramos follows Rousseff's trial from the perspective of her defense team. This is a slow-burning courtroom drama in which the various parties' appearances gradually transform the proceedings into something akin to theater. Inside the courtroom, grand emotions are played to full effect, while lobbyists and supporters pace the corridors on the other side of the doors. Meanwhile, demonstrators outside Brasilia's modernist government buildings are chanting like a Greek chorus. Only the main character, Rousseff, maintains her professional demeanor.
