What the Day Owes the Night
Algeria, in the 1930s, is the setting. Younes is nine years old when he is placed in the custody of his uncle in Oran. As Jonas, he grows up among the Rio Salado adolescents, with whom he forms friendships as a result of his conversion. Emilie is a member of the group, and everyone is head over heels in love with her. During the course of the novel, a wonderful love story develops between Jonas and Emilie, which is soon upended by political tensions raging throughout the country.
