Fireball XL5
Fireball XL5 follows the missions of starship Fireball XL5, commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac of the World Space Patrol. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson produced the show in 1962 for ITC Entertainment through their firm APF. Anderson found the sound of the motor oil Castrol XL was intriguing as he was creating his new program. The"-5" was inserted since "Fireball XL" sounded flat without it. The show utilized the Andersons' Supermarionation, a kind of puppetry previously seen in Four Feather Falls and Supercar. Fireball XL5 consisted of 39 35mm black and white half-hour episodes; all Anderson's subsequent series were created in color. Fireball XL5 is the only Anderson series to air on a US network. From September 1965 to the end of the series' run on NBC, the Saturday morning children's block, was aired the show. Space Patrol, produced by Gerry Anderson's ex-business partner and co-founder of AP Films, Arthur Provis, is commonly confused with Fireball XL5.
