Get a Life
Get a Life is a sitcom that was produced for American television and aired on the Fox Network in the United States from September 23, 1990, all the way through March 8, 1992. Chris Elliott plays the role of Chris Peterson, a 30-year-old paperboy, on this television drama. Peterson's residence was an apartment located over the garage that belonged to his parents. The opening credits of the show feature a clip of Chris Peterson riding his bicycle throughout town distributing newspapers to the tune of "Stand" by R.E.M. Elliott, Adam Resnick, and David Mirkin, who writes and directs the show, are the creators of the show. The majority of the episodes in the series were directed by Mirkin, who also served as the show's executive producer and showrunner. Among the notable authors that contributed to the series were Charlie Kaufman, who is best known for penning the screenplay for "Being John Malkovich," and Bob Odenkirk, who is best known for co-creating "Mr. Show with Bob and David" and "Tenacious D." It was unusual for a sitcom to air at prime time, and the plots of several of the episodes seemed to come from another dimension entirely. For instance, in the course of twelve episodes, Elliott's character winds up passing away. Strangulation, getting run over by cars, choking on cereal, exploding, falling from an airplane, being crushed by a giant boulder, old age, tonsillitis, stab wounds, gunshot wounds, falling from an airplane, tonsillitis, getting stab wounds, falling from an airplane, getting run over by cars, choking on cereal, and simply exploding were some of the causes of death. Because of this obstacle, it was extremely difficult for Elliott and Mirkin to get the show shown on television. A good many of the executives working for the Fox Network did not like the show and believed that it was too unsettling and that the character of Elliott was too psychotic.
