Judge Judy
Judith Sheindlin, a retired Manhattan Family Court Judge, hosts the American arbitration-based reality court show Judge Judy. Sheindlin adjudicates real-life small claims cases in a simulated courtroom setting on the show. All parties must sign documents consenting to Sheindlin-style arbitration. CBS Television Distribution distributes the series, which is currently in first-run syndication. The court show Judge Judy, which premiered on September16,1996, is said to have reinvigorated the genre. The People's Court and Jones and Jury were the only other arbitration-based reality court series that came before it. Sheindlin is recognized with pioneering the "tough" adjudicating style in the judicial genre, which has spawned a slew of imitators. The People's Court and Divorce Court, the two court shows with more seasons than Judge Judy, have both survived through many production runs and changing arbiters, making Sheindlin's tenure as a television arbiter the longest. Judge Judy had been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for 14 years in a row by 2011, but had never won. Judge Judy, on the other hand, earned its first Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program on June14,2013, after receiving its 15th nomination. It is the first Emmy for a long-running, popular court show.
