Lost in Space
Irwin Allen created and produced Lost in Space for 20th Century Fox Television and CBS. The show lasted from September 15, 1965, to March 6, 1968, with 83 episodes. First season filmed in black-and-white, rest in color. A Lost in Space movie was released in 1998. Many subsequent storylines focused on Dr. Zachary Smith, played by Jonathan Harris. Originally created as a malevolent but capable would-be saboteur, Smith gradually becomes the show's annoying, self-centered, incompetent foil, causing much of the friction and misfortunes. Smith and the robot weren't in the pilot. The unaired pilot's meteor shower derailed them. In the first episode, Smith's sabotage and unanticipated presence led to the meteors. In the unaired version, they were travelling so slowly that they thought they were on Mars, but in the first televised episode, just seconds of hyper-drive sent them light years beyond Earth.
