The Red Tent
Dinah is her given name. Her life is only alluded at in the Bible during a brief and violent digression from the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis concerning her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons. This epic miniseries tells the story of ancient womanhood via Dinah's passionate voice. The story of Dinah's mother begins with Jacob's four wives, Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah. They adore Dinah and offer her things that will help her get through a difficult childhood, a call to midwifery, and a new life in a faraway nation. Dinah describes the world of the red tent, where women were sequestered during their cycles of birth, menses, and illness; her initiations into her tribe's religious and sexual practices; Jacob's courtship with his four wives; the mystery and wonder of caravans, farmers, shepherds, and slaves; love and death in the city of Shechem; and, of course, her marriage to Shechem and its bloody consequences.
