John Travolta is a destitute single parent raising his daughter in a rough Chicago neighborhood. The young girl encounters and eventually brings back to health an injured Doberman used in combat. Duped by mafia figures for whom he was working as a courier, father and daughter abandon the dog and run across the nation to Los Angeles, pursued by both canine and mobsters.
