For C.R. MacNamara, advancing within the Coca-Cola firm means taking care of his boss W.P. Hazeltine's rebellious adolescent daughter Scarlett, who she considers her own. Otto Piffl, Scarlett's husband, is a communist and C.R. realizes that his boss's anti-establishment stance could jeopardize his advancement if Scarlett reveals her husband's political views in Berlin, where C.R. is stationed.
