Osama, a teenage girl, cuts her hair and dresses like a boy in order to seek a job and help her bereaved mother and grandmother sustain their family. When Osama is summoned by the Taliban to attend school and military training, she begins on a harrowing and perplexing adventure as she attempts to keep the Taliban from discovering her true identity, which is a difficult task.
