Disillusioned by useless warfare, shocked by their South Vietnamese ally's corruption, and continually threatened by their own company commander's incompetence, the young soldiers seek a way out of the conflict. They are told that if they lose a soccer game against a South Vietnamese team on purpose, they will be allowed to play exhibition games behind the lines for the rest of their tour.
