Thornton Wilder's second novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, was published in 1927 to widespread acclaim. It chronicles the deaths of numerous connected individuals in the collapse of an Inca rope-fiber suspension bridge in Peru, as well as the events leading up to their presence on the bridge. [A friar who observed the horrific event then inquires into the lives of the victims, seeking a cosmic explanation for why they had to die. In 1928, the novel was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
