John James is a writer, and his wife has abandoned him in recent years. He moves his two children, both of whom are in middle school, to a secluded house in South Carolina that is located off of a dirt road. His daughter Louisa, who is about to enter puberty, is very interested in an Indian burial mound that is located on the property.
