The Olive Tree
For generations, Alma's family has been producing high-quality olive oil in the Baix Maestrat area of Castellón, Spain. However, changing industry pressures have rendered their traditional practices economically unsustainable, and the family is now in the mass-production poultry business. Alma's grandfather hasn't spoken in years. He is overcome with sadness and no longer desires to eat. His sons—father Alma's and uncle—are impatient with him, but Alma understands. She realizes he's been grieving for a thousand-year-old olive tree that the family uprooted and sold to pay off some debts. (A sadly common reality in Castellón at the moment.) Unable to bear the thought of her grandfather dying without seeing this terrible wrong righted, Alma embarks on a perilous journey to find the tree and return it to the family orchard, so that her grandfather can die in peace.
