Valerie, a Czechoslovakian adolescent living with her grandmother, is maturing into a lady, but the consequences she experiences when she dons a pair of magical earrings take precedence. Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while striving to differentiate between fact and dream as she encounters the lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger, and otherworldly carnival folk.
