Women are scarce among the employees on Roy Whitman's farm in the California Valley, where "The West" ends in Texas and only California is progressively colonized by white men. So he returns to Chicago to find 150 wives for his employees. He chooses 138 applicants who can endure a month-long expedition over "The Great American Desert" and the Rocky Mountains. Tom Zoerner
