Murmur of the Heart

Following the life of 15-year-old Laurent Chevalier as he struggles to navigate the tumultuous waters of puberty in 1950s France, this loosely written coming-of-age story is a delight. A case of scarlet fever strikes Chevalier shortly after having his first sexual experience with a prostitute and avoiding the kiss of the parish priest. Because of his heart murmur caused by the fever, Chevalier is hospitalized, along with his over-attentive and adulterous mother, who is also in the sanatorium.
