Pocketful of Miracles
Director Frank Capra tells Damon Runyon's fable, which is lovely and amusing. Apple is boozy and brassy. Annie, the apple-carrying beggar, is as much a fixture of downtown New York as old Broadway itself. Dave the Dude, a bootlegger, is a sucker for her apples, believing they bring him good fortune. However, Dave and girlfriend Queenie Martin will require much more than luck when it becomes clear that Annie is in a pickle and only they can help: Annie's daughter Louise, who has spent her whole life in a Spanish convent, is traveling to America with a Count and his son. Louise believes her mother is a member of New York society and wishes to marry the count's son. Dave and Queenie, together with their Runyonesque henchmen, are tasked with the task of transforming Annie into a lady and convincing the Count and his son that they are among New York's elite.
