Remember the Sultana
Over 2000 Union soldiers, guests and team were crammed aboard the steamboat Sultana, licensed to carry 376. Graft, greed, congestion, an improperly maintained watercraft, as well as the Mississippi River was inflamed with spring snowmelt conspired with each other to create a disaster. On April 27, 1865, the watercraft's central heating boilers blew up, triggering the worst maritime catastrophe in United States history.
