After the Spanish Civil War ended in April 1939, dictator Franco crushed Spain with his heavy boot. In November 1940, Pepita traveled from the small town of Huelva to Madrid to be with her sister Hortensia, who was seven months pregnant and in jail with the threat of a death sentence.
