Life of Crime
Denise Woods, a female police officer, is central to Life of Crime. The story follows Denise as she rises through the ranks of the Metropolitan Police Service over three decades (starting with the Brixton Riots of 1985). She initially has difficulties in an extremely male-dominated profession where sexism is rampant and female officers must fight for acceptance. However, as dawn breaks one September morning, Denise joins DS Ray Deans at a crime scene where she discovers the bruised, abused, and strangled body of a teenager named Anna. Denise is motivated to bring Anna's killer to prison after a previous meeting with the adolescent. Denise goes against the explicit order and advice of her superior officers and pursues her own lines of inquiry since the facts surrounding Anna's murder are not as they appear. Denise's enthusiasm for the case causes her to clash with her superior officer, DCI Ferguson.
